The broad argument that everyone should get every bonus from every monument is, to put it simply, utter garbage. They reworked Catholicism in Emperor but didn't fix anything about it. Catholic "features" like Cardinals and Religious Orders, are locked behind culture or region requirements, which is absurd. Orthodox, Protestant, Islam (especially Sunni), Hindu, and now even arguably Totemist are better gameplay options, despite the setting of the game being the Early Modern Era. The fact that Catholics can't use Hagia Sophia seems to be deliberately discriminatory, given that it isn't just restricted to Orthodox.Ĭatholicism is the most boring and least powerful of all the major religions. It's a shame because they have seemed to take an approach of focusing exclusively on the positive elements of other faiths, such as Protestantism, Islam, and Orthodoxy, which in turn has made those more fun to play. Also, some of the events in game perpetuate the myth that the Bible was not translated into vernacular languages until after Martin Luther. Don't even get me started on the fact that the "Counter-Reformation" used to cause a tech cost increase, despite the fact that one of the primary goals of the counter-reformation was to *expand* education in Europe.

Click to expand. How about the fact that Catholic is still the only commonly-played religion in the game which actually penalizes the player for being Catholic? And worse, it's a "tolerance of heretics" penalty which feeds off of the old Spanish Black Legend that Catholics were somehow less tolerant of other Christians than any other Christian group.
